Bao’an Waterfront Cultural Park

Location: Mainland China

Year: 2020

The Park is located at the interface of Bao’an city and its inner harbour, with ocean views of Qianhai Bay to the south and backed onto the rapidly developing Qianhai regional centre to the north. Bao’an District is gradually transforming from a traditional manufacturing zone into a new hub of the international metropolis.

How might we transform an entrance into a welcoming place to greet visitors?

The park has multiple entrances and an open structure, making it well-connected to the surrounding retail and urban environment, drawing in visitors from all sides.

How might we provide multi-purpose spaces to allow flexible use?

The park is divided into 4 separate yet coherent zones: a cultural park, a sports park, a performing art centre and a commercial area. Each zone has its own unique architectural design, distinct features and functions, allowing visitors to navigate to their intended destinations easily.

The undulating green roofs in the park create a layered network of multi-functional, elevated spaces, including gardens, outdoor performance areas, and a running trail.

How might we make the POS stand out?

The “Bay Glory” Ferris Wheel is the landmark of the park, characterised by the white “Fin-shaped” stand that wraps the carts and blends perfectly with the theme of the park.

How might we promote heat loss and reduce heat gain?

The orientation of the retail blocks is carefully configured to optimise natural ventilation by enhancing wind and thermal pressure.
