Belcher Bay Promenade is a picturesque waterfront walkway along the shoreline of Belcher Bay in Hong Kong. This well-maintained promenade offers a tranquil escape from bustling city life and showcases stunning views of the surrounding waters and distant skyline.
A minimalist design approach is employed, featuring mobile facilities such as adjustable cargo pallets, rocking chairs, and portable play equipment. This allows visitors of all ages to customise the space according to their preferences and needs.
K-Farm, a 2,000-square-metre community garden managed by an NGO, boasts an array of amenities and attractions, including guided tours and agricultural activities for all age groups. The farm’s mission is to foster sustainable, compassionate communities by advocating for physical and emotional wellness, as well as social inclusivity, through diverse farming initiatives across various districts. The farm also offers a welcoming open space for leisure and relaxation.
Some users expressed concerns about the safety of the mobile facilities at the site. Nevertheless, the management team stresses the significance of being open to innovative ideas before deeming them unsuccessful. If any issues arise, modifications will be made accordingly. Prompt action will aid in enhancing the environment while fostering creativity.
The site’s experimental approach to design and management allows operators to learn from failures or, if successful, apply the lessons to other locations.
Local tour specialists were invited to host a series of online programmes for the public to learn more about the site and the neighbourhood. Invited green groups provided recycling bins to promote environmental conscience in the area. Local community groups and education institutions were engaged in railing design and hoarding panel design, respectively.
The needs of the local community were assessed through observation and gathering feedback. This “bottom-up” management strategy enables the optimisation of the site and ensures that each facility functions as anticipated, meeting the expectations of users.
The Aqua is an aquaponic system integrating a 14-square-metre fishpond with six farming racks. The fishpond houses over a hundred tilapias, while the farming racks support the growth of plants like herbs and vegetables. The purpose of the aquaponic system is to transform fish waste, which contains ammonia, into nitrite and then into nitrate. The nitrate-enriched water nourishes the plants, and their roots simultaneously purify the nutrient-rich water. This water is then recirculated back into the fishpond. This system is a sustainable solution that fosters a mutually beneficial environment for fish, plants, and microorganisms.
