Location: Hong Kong SAR
Year: 2019
Situated along the waterfront of Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong, the park connects Admiralty to the Western District and improves the continuity of the Central and Western District Promenade. Fung Mat Road WE Park is modelled after the pipe play equipment from the 1970s and was designed through a joint effort by the Central and Western District Office, Playright Children’s Play Association, local students and artists.
4 containers serve as portable exhibition spaces and locations for diverse artistic and creative workshops. The art displays are consistently updated to align with various themes.
The park offers unique play equipment inspired by 1970s concrete pipe structures, promoting a more adventurous play experience in Hong Kong. It encourages children to participate in the creation of play space. It aims to preserve local culture and collective memories through pipe play equipment, which mimics the sculptural pieces in the Shek Lei Playground from the 1970s. The concrete pipes also symbolise the district’s culture, resonating with the sewer pipe beneath Fung Mat Road across Victoria Harbour.
Local students are part of the “designers” of WE Park. With the use of recycled materials, children design and construct their ideal play equipment.
