Hart’s Mill Surrounds is a rejuvenated and appealing public space in Port Adelaide, situated next to the wharf and set against the backdrop of one of Adelaide’s most emblematic heritage-listed industrial structures.
A creative play area, inspired by the location’s flour milling past, is a significant feature of the site. The design incorporates elements from various port trade activities in the wharf precinct and has been established as a play facility intended to have a regional level of appeal.
The current rail line has been preserved and honoured in its original condition to keep a connection to the past and the port’s crucial function as an export centre. The rail line is bordered by elevated green platforms, conceived as vessels holding new park areas, within a highly altered and polluted location.
The project successfully created a lively and appealing public space for Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide, making a significant contribution to the area’s revitalisation. The initiative established a top-notch destination as part of a series of “early win” efforts implemented around the port to increase visitation, improve accessibility, and enhance waterfront amenities.
