The Restorative Ground at Hudson Square lies between a street and a parking lane along King Street. It was initiated as part of the local community’s participation in New York City’s Open Streets Program.
Before designing, the project team consulted disability activists, autism advocates, women, teens, and children, aiming for an inclusive design considering sensory sensitivity, physical ability, and age. The Hudson Square community, including visitors, residents, and office workers, was also involved in addressing individual and collective needs for a vibrant public life.
The space includes three distinct experiential zones: focused, active, and calm. This simultaneously facilitates active and passive activities, such as outdoor workshops and events, informal play, and relaxation.
Restorative Ground uses a great mix of vivid colours in the hardware design that is playful and stimulative.
