Tainan Spring

Location: Taiwan

Year: 2020

Tainan Spring sits at the centre of Tainan, east of the Tainan Canal. The site was formerly a harbour serving the marine and fishing industry since the 17th century. With the decline of water transportation, however, it was reclaimed for the construction of China Town Mall in 1983. Since the large commercial structure no longer serves its intended purpose, the Tainan City Government transformed the site into a sunken public plaza.

How might we provide multi-purpose spaces to allow flexible use?

The pool at the sunken plaza could be easily drained to host various events.

How might we enhance the user experience through the use of soft landscape?

In Tainan, greenery is introduced into the “grey city” through large plantings of a mix of local plants that recreate the natural landscape. The lagoon at the sunken plaza serves as an interactive water feature while bringing nature into the site.

How might we incorporate neighbourhood characters to strengthen place attachment?

The site is repurposed from a disused mall. The large pillars were kept as ornamental ruins to reduce waste and maintain authenticity. Foundations of the former mall were also retained to maintain the area’s character and authenticity.

The location was transformed from an abandoned shopping centre, with the substantial columns preserved as decorative remnants to minimise waste and preserve originality. The previous mall’s foundations were retained to uphold the area’s distinctiveness and genuineness.

How might we react to climate change to enable future-ready POS?

The water level at the sunken plaza pool adjusts in response to the rainy and dry seasons.
