Tung O Ancient Trail

Location: Hong Kong SAR

Year: Currently revitalising

Tung O Ancient Trail is a scenic and historically significant hiking path located on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island. Established centuries ago, the trail was once a vital connection between Tung Chung and Tai O, two prominent fishing villages. Meandering through lush forests, coastal areas, and picturesque landscapes, the trail offers a journey back in time, showcasing ancient relics and traditional stilt houses.

How might we design entering as the beginning of a desirable user experience?

How might we provide a comparable user journey for users of different abilities?

The coastal trail passes several local piers in nearby villages, including the Sha Lo Wan public pier, which has regular ferry services. Some travellers choose to take a ferry to Sha Lo Wan and hike to Tai O rather than navigate the entire trail. This alternative path has expanded the range of visitors and activities, allowing those with lower physical stamina to access the area via water transport.

How might we enhance community-building through better communication channels?

A variety of stakeholders, such as residents, trail users, designers, and experts from various fields, participated in a collaborative process to gain insight into their requirements, perspectives, and aspirations for the trail’s future. The project’s public engagement activities included expeditions, co-design workshops, scenario-building sessions, online public surveys, prototype testing sessions, in-depth interviews, and oral history collection.
